Another Place

‘Another Place’ consists of 100 iron casts of the artist’s body, which are spread out over three kilometres of the shore and stretch about one kilometre out to sea, at Crosby just north of Liverpool. The figures are set into the shore at different depths, and all look out to sea.

The work has been described as ‘a poetic response to the individual and universal sentiments associated with emigration - sadness at leaving, but the hope of a new future in another place’.

Another Place

An artist’s body cast
one hundred times over
across the dynamic coastal margin
scanning the horizon highway
at the going and coming Mersey gateway.

Some are overcome by forceful water waves
yet others stand erect and tall
strongly embedded against the forceful tide
and abrasive windblown sand.

At times an exhilarating place where
bright sunlight streams and sunsets burn
at others a desolate, sombre, fearful and foreboding place.

But, against all this, an encrusted aging body is exposed
- a demonstration of elemental at-onement.
