Vicar’s Close

Vicar’s Close is one of Europe’s oldest residential streets with its buildings still in use. It was built in 14th century to house the Vicars Choral, the priests who chanted daily services in Wells Cathedral. It is still inhabited in the main by the men (and now women too) who continue to sing in the Cathedral. Some improvements have already been made to the properties, but an extensive maintenance programme is now required. National Lottery Funding has been granted, but further matched funding is needed so the work of preservation can begin.
Vicars’ Close is a popular destination for tourists to Wells and its Cathedral. These images aim to convey the uniqueness of this location and inspire the public to support the raising of the necessary funding.
